Reader question:

Auto insurance for a Houston TX used car would be pretty cheap, correct?

Manuel

Glad you asked.

Well, Texas is pretty far down on the list when it comes to high auto insurance prices, so a Houston TX used car is necessarily going to cost much less to insure than a used car in New Jersey, but that doesn’t mean that you should automatically just assume it will be cheap. In fact, you need to find out the insurance costs ahead of time so that you can factor them into your budget.

Once you know what type of Houston TX used car you want, you should run each of them through an auto insurance quotes database so that you can see what each would cost you from several different companies.

Also remember that, since you will probably be making month by month payments on your Houston TX used car, you will also have to have both comprehensive and collision auto isnurance coverage. Make sure you take these into account when you are rating your possible new cars.

Cheap used cars in Houston

Reader question:

What are the price ranges for cheap used cars in Houston?

Michael

Great question!

There are many types of cheap used cars in Houston out there, but just how you view them as cheap will depend on your budget and the kind of car you’re looking for. Here’s what you’re most likely to get for your money.

  • $10-20k

This is going to be a middle line kind of car which has agd around 3 or 4 years. This car will give you a few years of great service with absolutely no problems, as long as you do your maintenance duty and keep it going. These tend to be sold as certified cars at new car dealerships.

  • $5-9k

This car will probably be between the ages of 5 and 10. It’ll be a good car, still, although it will have a lot of mileage on it. You can find one of these from a smaller dealer for cheap used cars in Houston.

$1-2k

These cars might help you out of a tight spot, but they won’t last you long. These are the cars you can buy from your neighbor or some weirdo on Craigslist, and they’ll probably break down within a year.

Houston used car sales

Reader question:

What is the best price for Houston used car sales?

Jordan

Excellent question, Jordan.

Before you figure out what you are going to buy from the Houston used car sales, you need to figure out how much money you can shell out. Sit at your kitchen table and draw up a budget. Your car expenses–including oil changes, tires, and so on–should not come up to over 20% of your household budget. If it does, you will be tight on money.

Then, start checking out prices on the different Houston used car sales. Remember that even if you have a tight budget to spend on, you still shouldn’t just automatically go with the cheapest car. Sure, sometimes cheap cars can turn out to be really great deals, but most of the time they are just disasters under a very welcoming outside.

Say you get some prices going from $10,000 to $20,000. Since you’re looking for a used car, $20,000 is a bit much. I mean, you might as well buy a new car for that amount. $10,000 isn’t likely to get you a good car, either. You should try, instead, to settle in the median with $14,000 to $15,000.

Used car dealers in Houston

Reader question:

How can I get a car from one of the used car dealers in Houston without risking getting a dud? I’m used to buying cars brand new, but I just don’t have the money this time.

George

Great question, George.

  1. Look hard to find what you like. You don’t want to start playing guesswork on which car is the best the second you walk onto any of the used car dealers in Houston. You need to move around the internet, read reviews, find out the car’s flaws and is great parts, find out what other people are saying about it. When you have you’re on just one or two models, then okay.
  2. Once you see the car at one of the used car dealers in Houston, don’t fall in love before you see the vehicle history report, which you can obtain using the VIN. This has info on crashes, floods, robberies, so on.
  3. Don’t listen to what the salespeople say. Look for yourself. Get a mechanic to check it over.
  4. Watch your papers. This is more important when you are getting your used car from a private owner, because you have to make sure you aren’t buying a stolen car or one that’s still owed on.

Used car dealerships in Houston

Reader question:

I’ve been stopping around some of the used car dealerships in Houston, but to be honest, I’m still kind of torn over whether I want a used car or a new one. Can you push me in the right direction?

Greg

Thanks for asking, Greg.

I’m sure you’ve heard the spiel from the salespeople at the used car dealerships in Houston before, but I can give you the skinny without the spin. Here’s how it is. Think of how, when you buy a car, the worth of i depreciates so fast–it’s more than halfed by the time you’ve only owned it for three years. You find yourself in a situation where you’re in an upside down loan, and the car is worth less than you owe. Even if you no longer want the car, there’s no way you can sell to get out of it.

If you buy a used car at one of the used car dealerships in Houston, you don’t have that problem. It depreciates slowly. Many dealerships will even sell you a warranty to go with it, so if you choose your used vehicle correctly, it’s not too far from buying an actual new car. This is especially so if you hop on the certified used car bandwagon, considering that certified used cars tend to be in great shape, cheap, and only fiveor three years old.

Sure, there is still a sense of uncertainty when you purchase a used car, which is why you have to be more careful than ever. With the right kind of dedication, though, you can find a used car that will blow any new car away.

Houston Chevrolet courtesy

I think that one of the most important things in the car buying process is Houston Chevrolet courtesy, which is something you should be on the look at for at every car lot that you visit or attend. I’ve left car lots regardless of prices because of a simple lack of Houston Chevrolet courtesy.

This can manifest in more than one way. One of them is a complete disinterest on the part of the salesperson to actually sell you the car. Where’s the Houston Chevrolet courtesy here? Another is a hint that the salesperson is not telling you the whole truth. You expect that the person is trying to sell the car to get commission, obviously, but there is no reason for a salesperson to outright cheat and lie to you. Go somewhere else.

Knapp Houston Chevrolet

I saw a commercial from Knapp Houston Chevrolet about an offer for zero percent financing, and since I needed a car, I was up there pretty fast. They ran the credit check on me and left me waiting in the little side room for about forty five minutes, and when the Knapp Houston Chevrolet salesperson came back, he said they had approved me for financing with 2.89% APR. I’m like, “what?”

As it turns out, you have to have practically perfect credit to get the 0% financing deal from Knapp Houston Chevrolet or anywhere else, so be careful before you hit the street after you see a commercial like that. The Knapp Houston Chevrolet people were very nice, though, and they managed to get me a rebate instead of the zero percent financing.

Q: How do I negotiate with my Chevrolet dealer in Houston Texas for a good sale price?

A: Well, first of all, you have to think about where your Chevrolet dealer in Houston Texas is getting its prices from. There are several factors which affect the price that the Chevrolet dealer in Houston Texas will quote to you.

  • dealer holdback
  • incentives
  • rebates
  • supply and demand
  • trade in
  • invoice price
  • rebates

First you have to remember that your Chevrolet dealer in Houston Texas isn’t going to give you the correct invoice price, only the current one. In reality, the invoice price is about three percent less than that price because of dealer holdback, which means you have more room to negotiate in.

You should also try to take advantage of any incentives. There are two kinds of incentives. One is offered by the Chevrolet dealer in Houston Texas, and the other is from the factory. They usually tell you about the first kind, but finding out about the second kind might take some footwork.

If you’re getting a newer car, then that car will cost more, and if you’re getting a really popular car, then it will be hard to negotiate with your Chevrolet dealer in Houston Texas because of the law of supply and demand. You can’t judge how this will affect one Chevrolet dealer in Houston Texas based on another dealer, because everyone is different.

Q: How do I know if a car from a Chevrolet dealer in Houston TX is safe?

A: Safety is one of the first things that I look for in a vehicle, before color or performance or anything like that. I have two small children, so I have to know that when I go out on the road, the car that I bought from my Chevrolet dealer in Houston TX is going to protect them if anything should happen. So, basically, I can honestly see why you would be worried about that. You need to be very thorough to find the safest car from a Chevrolet dealer in Houston TX.

First, do what I do and call up the Chevrolet dealer in Houston TX. You’re going to have to do this to get a quote on the car, anyway. Ask them about the cars that you’re interested in and ask them what safety features come with the car standard and which ones you would have to pay extras for. This is a good indicator of whether or not you should get a car. If too many of the safety features are at an extra cost, then you might want to either consider another car or look for another Chevrolet dealer in Houston TX.

I also always get a quote for my collision car insurance coverage before I buy a car. Car insurance companies have databases with information about cars that have the most collision and property damage liability claims filed for them, so if you get a really high quote on your collision coverage, that’s probably an indicator that the car has had a lot of collision claims filed for it.

Also, I look at the government safety crash tests. They test how a car reacts in an accident from a side impact, front impact, and so on. They also check how a person would be injured in each different car in those situations. The websites for the organizations that to the safety crash tests have a lot of good information.

Q: When I go to the Chevrolet dealer in Houston to get my new car, what kind of safety features should I ask for?

A: If I were you, I would really stock up on these. The safety of the car is the most important part, especially if you have a bad driving record. It gets you a lower car insurance rate, too, and you can get a better price on your car later on if you decide to sell it back to your Chevrolet dealer in Houston, or even to somebody else. Here are the safety features that I had installed on the car I bought a couple of months ago at my Chevrolet dealer in Houston.

  • Anti lock brakes.

It rains all the time in Houston, so I really recommend you ask your Chevrolet dealer in Houston to add this option onto our car. It helps you keep control of your vehicle when you’re driving on slippery roads, such as when they’re icy or slick with rain.

  • Electronic stability system.

This system goes together with the anti lock brakes. If you start to go out of your lane, the electronic stability system keeps you in line. It also helps you to avoid rollovers.

  • Traction control.

This makes sure that you don’t lose control of your vehicle while you’re speeding up. So long as you’re a careful driver, it might not be necessary to ask your Chevrolet dealer in Houston to add this, but I did.

  • Headlights.

Daytime running headlights and high intensity headlights from Xenon are helping to make vehicles more visible to other drivers and thus make it less likely that they will get into a crash. The daytime running lights are good in the day, but the Xenon lights aren’t always good since at night they can be a little blinding to oncoming drivers.

  • Instrument displays.

If you’ve ever lost a little control of your car while you were looking down to check how fast you were going, then you understand the need of these. They display things such as your gas and speedometer in the windshield so that you don’t have to move your head to see them.

  • Parking assist.

Every year a few people die because the person in the driver’s seat doesn’t see them while they’re backing out. Parking assist offers cameras that the driver can look at to make sure that there’s nobody in their blind spot.
