Reader’s Question:

My wife, Michelle, wants a car for her own. I really don’t want to give her a secondhand car, but I’d like something that I can consider low maintenance. After all, Michelle’s still a relatively new driver. What would you recommend?

Al

Houston, TX

Hi there, Al! Good question there, what’s a good starter car for the missus? The average choice for the wife would usually by a mini-SUV or a crossover. But since you are harping more on the convenience of having a low maintenance vehicle, I think your wife is better off driving a compact in Texas. I am assuming that your wife, Michelle, will be the primary driver of the car and she won’t be driving a lot of people around with her.

I think the 2009 Chevrolet Aveo will be a great start for your wife. However, I would pick out the Aveo 2LT Sedan for her. You can still fit 5 people inside the car and drive around with ease with its 1.6 L VVT engine. It also has cruise control. In terms of ease on your wallet, the Aveo 2LT can still do 25 miles per gallon in the city and 34 miles per gallon on the highway. The perks that come with the car includes a free three-month XM Radio subscription, of course, we can’t let the missus drive bored. There’s also a remote keyless entry feature, so your wife doesn’t even have to fumble with her keys. Safety? Of course there are airbags for the driver and front passenger and side-impact airbags. There’s also OnStar to give additional support for the wife in case of emergencies. Overall, the Aveo 2LT Sedan will be an excellent choice for her.

2009 Chevrolet Cobalt Texas TX

Reader’s Question:

Is the Cobalt another boring compact? What can you tell me about it? Is it worth driving in Texas?

Carlito

Houston, TX

Hello to you, Carlito of Houston, Texas! Are you gonna go your way to your nearest Houston Chevrolet dealer? Well, we all know that Chevrolet loves churning out these cars to compete against, most likely, Japanese-designed cars. The selling point of these kinds of cars would be the advantageous fuel economy the owner can get. So, if you are thinking of an exciting and fun automobile to drive…Well, I will leave it you to decide. Don’t get me wrong with that statement, I hate spoiling the fun for anyone. Looking from afar, that Rally Yellow on the SS coupe looks pretty exciting to me. But that’s just me.

What options are available for you if you get enamored by the looks of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt? Okay, engine-wise, gone are the 1.6 liters from previous years of the Cobalt. For this year model, expect a zippier 2.0 liter 260 hp engine on, let me clear my throat first, the Turbo SS Coupe/Sedan Cobalt. I’m pretty sure that isn’t what you were expecting on something that supposed to do 30 on the highway. For the more standard trims, you get a 2.2 liter ECOTEC that generates 155 hp of power and can do 37 mpg on your highway. I think I’ll call the Cobalt “mini-muscle.”
